Good Old Fred

If you have read our previous blogs, you will know that we have fostered cats, Tiana, followed by the brothers Baguette & Rye. We did not have to wait too long in between each assignment.

Next, we got Fred, a big 12 year old male. Fred was wonderful. Unlike the energetic young cats, Fred was relaxed and very friendly. Right from the start he wanted to sit on your lap and he would "make biscuits".  In other words he was kneading with his front paws. He would do this even when he was lying on his back, kneading the air. So cute. He loved being brushed and we did it twice a day. The only thing that he did not like was being kept in his bedroom with the door closed. He would howl that deep tom cat howl and wake us up during the night or in the early morning. We decided that, because of his age, Fred could be trusted to be in his room with the door open and if he wanted to wander during the night, he was free to do so. He was now happy. Just like humans, every cat is different and you have to treat them according to their needs and personality.
Here is Fred getting his daily brushing.
Notice the front paws kneading the chair (no damage) and being content.

A close up of Fred. Sometimes he showed his age.

"This is so relaxing!"
If I were able to keep a cat Fred would be the one, but I don't think that he would be comfortable travelling with us on our journey across Canada. He was such a lovely cat though. One day we took him to the SPCA shelter for a check up and they said, "Fred is ready so you can leave him and he will be put up for adoption". I must say that it was a little difficult but as a foster parent that is what you do. You take care of them the best you can and then they are gone and you wait for the next one.

The next day, we did get a mother cat and her three kittens but that is for another blog post. I must say that several times when we took in the family of 4, Fred was still in the adoption room waiting for his forever home. We would go in and visit with him for a while. You will be glad to hear that finally Fred did find a new home and is happy sleeping on their bed and couch. Good old Fred!
