More Big Things

Since the last time we posted about the "big" things in New Brunswick on July 2, 2019, we have been travelling and have seen some more "big" things.

1. World's Largest Lobster:  Due to the fact that Shediac is recognized the world over as "The Lobster Capital of the World", in 1989 the Shediac Rotary Club thought if was fitting to erect a monument in tribute of the crustacean and the industry in the area. The monument stands at 11 m (35 ft.) in length, 5 m (16 ft.) in width and 5 m (16 ft.) in height. The sculpture weighs around 90 tonnes. A staircase was erected on the pedestal to allow visitors to climb up on the monument to have their pictures taken.

2. Restigouche Sam: In a large fountain in Campbellton, emerges Restigouche Sam, a mighty Atlantic Salmon. This monument is a tribute to the Atlantic Salmon which is fished in this area. It was a prime reason for settlement along the Restigouche River.

In addition, down the street, along the river's edge is a sculpture of a fisherman struggling to reel in a Salmon. A very appropriate sculpture.

 3. World's Largest Maple Leaf: The competition for the largest maple leaf heats up. Millville, New Brunswick, claims to have the largest Maple Leaf. On our way out to Town, we went through Millville and completely missed the "world's largest maple leaf", as the sign below the leaf states. We went back to Millville later the next week and I was so disappointed. It was much, much smaller than I expected.

The leaf was maybe 3 to 4 feet tall.
Now, when we travelled up to Saint Quentin, New Brunswick we heard of a much larger Maple Leaf sculpture in town. Although, we did not see it, we heard about it and below is photo of it. It was built in recognition of the town's centennial anniversary a few years ago. It is a whopping 20 feet tall, overshadowing the one in Millville.

I'm sure that there are more big things in the province. We will just have to search for them. If we find more we'll report it to you.
