When you drive south from where we live on the highway you see a large field with a large sign announcing Buffaloland. During the many times traveling by the park, we had never seen any buffalo so one day we decided to check it out and get a closer look. Well, as we were driving by; there they were. The whole herd of about 40 were in the field. We drove in, (no cost) and walked a short distance to a short observation tower and watched as the buffalo slowly made their way past us and went to their pen.
It certainly is a one-of-a-kind park on Prince Edward Island. At one time this was a provincial park and it originally started with a buffalo pair which were a gift to P.E.I. from the province of Alberta in 1973. In 2013, the Moonlight International Foundation. a charitable organization affiliated with the Buddhist monks. Apparently they bought the property and herd for $1.00. It is now their responsibility to keep the animals safe and healthy.

Unlike the gift of four Moose to Newfoundland from New Brunswick which were introduced to the provincial interior and multiplied rapidly, these buffalo have been well maintained, managed and are not a burden, financially or otherwise, to the surrounding communities or province as a whole. The community is very proud and protective of this unique tourist attraction.
