Dining Like a Passenger of the Titanic

Once again, we visited the Johnson Geo Centre in order to finish viewing all the exhibits on geological matters such as volcanoes, rock formations, space, etc. I was once again drawn to the Titanic exhibit. What is it that attracts me to this tragedy? Is it that it was a sad and avoidable tragedy or something more? It may be the time period when it occurred, an exciting time which was the beginning of the information and mega-building era. As the poster below says, "the deaths were not in vain."

In 2018, I look forward to visiting the Titanic museum in Nova Scotia and possibly the cemetery where many of the victims have been buried.

Some of these men had a part to play in the sinking of the Titanic.

A simulation of the ship hitting the iceberg

These pictures are of the ship as it was seen at the bottom of the ocean

A legend that movies are made from.
Above are the words to the hymn and below are the professional and heroic orchestra members.

Do you remember this camp song? I remember singing it at camp as a counselor in my teens and as a Girl Guide Leader.

Titanic
Oh, they built the ship Titanic, to sail the ocean blue.
For they thought it was a ship that water would never go through.
It was on its maiden trip, that an iceberg hit the ship.
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Chorus:
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad, so sad.
It was sad when the great ship went down (to the bottom of the....)
Uncles and aunts, little children lost their pants.
It was sad when the great ship went down
.
Oh the captain smiled and winked
As the ship began to sink
And he said "The fish are surely going to stink"
So he S.O.S.ed the Lord
And he jumped right overboard
It was sad when the great ship went down
Repeat chorus
They were not far from the shore, 'bout a thousand miles or more,
When the rich refused to associate with the poor.
So they threw them down below, where they were the first to go.
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Repeat chorus
Oh, the heroes saved the weak, as the ship began to leak.
And the band on deck played on.
With, "Nearer my God to Thee", they were swept into the sea.
It was sad when the great ship went down.
Repeat chorus
Oh they built a sister ship, Called the S.S. Kunatah
And they knew it was a ship that would never get very far.
So, they christened it with GOP,
And it sunk with a Ker-Plop!
It was glad when the sad ship went down.
Repeat chorus
I do remember an alternate ending to the song
After the last chorus, there is an extra "so sad, too bad" spoken-sung, and this:
Kerplunk
It sunk
Hunk a junk
In the sea
without me
Luckily
Hee hee hee.

To top off my fascination with the Titanic, a local restaurant, the Woodstock Colonial, had a Titanic-themed menu for the month of April. Apparently it was quite popular. We took our friends, Bernie and Erika, there as a thank you for storing our camping over the winter. The food was delicious and we had a lovely time.

There is so much to do in the St. John's area. When you come to St. John's, I would recommend visiting the Johnson Geo Centre (allow a whole day or several shorter periods to explore this attraction) and try the various culinary menus offered in town. Delectable!
